Critical care management is an ever evolving branch that poses a number of challenges. Clinicians managing acutely ill patients need to perform a number of procedures, both invasive and noninvasive, on these patients daily, that form an integral part of their effective patient- management. Dr. Mohan Gurjar, Associate Professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (India), has written a book titled “Manual of ICU Procedures” for clinicians and intensivists practicing critical care medicine. The editor of the book is an eminent clinician with vast experience in the field of critical care medicine. This book is an amalgamation of chapters that have been contributed by anesthesiologists, intensivists, emergency medicine physicians, pulmonologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, pediatric surgeons, and cardiologists.

“Manual of ICU Procedures” is the first and finest book of its kind that acts as a comprehensive guide to all the procedures that are commonly performed in an intensive care unit. The book has been divided into five sections which include airway and respiratory procedures, vascular and cardiac procedures, neurological procedures, gastrointestinal and genitourinary procedures, and miscellaneous procedures. Each section further includes chapters that deal with various procedures performed in an intensive care unit. The procedures relevant to the pediatric population have also been explained in detail. Chapters on fiberoptic intubation and videolaryngoscopy give a detailed description of the equipment used followed by a comprehensive explanation of the procedures step by step. The illustrations and photographs included are self-explanatory. The book includes a chapter on manual chest physiotherapy, which is concise, highly informative and explains the applied anatomy, preparation, and technique of chest physiotherapy. The section on vascular and cardiac procedures gives an in-depth explanation of simple procedures like venous and arterial cannulation to procedures as complex as intra-aortic balloon pump counterpulsation. Various neurological, gastrointestinal, abdominal, and genitourinary procedures have also been dealt with in an easy-to-understand manner. The section on miscellaneous procedures covers important topics like management of needle-stick injury and pressure ulcers, surveillance of ICU-acquired infection, sampling in ICU, blood component handling, and patient mobilization. The book is a consolidated material on ICU procedures, which have been explained in a simple and easy-to-understand language, beginning with basic principles, to eventually deal with more complex issues. Content of the entire textbook is uniform, with step-by-step explanation of each procedure beginning with introduction, indications, contraindications, preprocedural preparation, detailed procedure, postprocedure care, and complications.

This book will serve as a practical guide for all critical care physicians. I recommend this book to all clinicians, health-care professionals, postgraduate students, and trainees managing critical patients in intensive care units. It also gives numerous clinical pearls to successfully carrying out interventions and procedures in intensive care unit. This book is a reflection of the progress that has been made toward clinical and educational maturity in the field of management of critically and acutely ill patients.
